Sharp End Guest Update: Greg from Episode 28

I recently caught up with Greg Smith from Episode 28: Ground Fall At Calico Basin. He reached out to give me an update this month (February 2023) on his progress since falling in Red Rock Canyon in February 2017. Greg was 10 feet above his last piece of protection on a moderate climb in Calico Basin, outside Las Vegas, when he fell unexpectedly. His only piece pulled out and he hit the ground. His climbing partner had to fill in many details from the accident because Greg has very little memory of the day.

In his update, Greg writes:

“Hi Ashley, you might recall our chat for The Sharp End podcast in 2018, concerning my February 2017 fall in Red Rock Canyon [Episode 28 - “Ground Fall in Calico Basin”]. I hope this finds you well and safe and peaceful.

Anyway, last November, on my 60th birthday, I finally returned to Red Rock Canyon, to see an old friend -- with whom, unfortunately, my last visit (in 2017) didn't end well.

Below are (1) a photo of the scene taken February 7, 2017 and (2) a photo taken November 7, 2022. Yep, that's me in both.

It was quite a day, retracing my steps. Far and away, the best part was giving my old friend a pat and a smile, and then turning and walking away under my own power. Just recalling it brings warmth to my heart and a tear to my eye.

Every day, I stop for a minute, have a look around, and say to myself, "If this ain't good, I don't know what is." Thanks again for taking an interest in my story.

Peace, GREG”

I so appreciate guest updates and hearing about their progress. It is truly inspiring, especially as I am in my own healing journey after knee surgery. THANK YOU for the inspiration and sharing your life with me! If you haven’t listened to Greg’s episode yet, check it out anywhere you listen to your podcasts!
